DESOLATION OF SMAUG is Second Biggest December Midnight Opener of All Time
THE HOBBIT: DESOLATION OF SMAUG made $8.8 million in midnight opening alone, which is the second biggest midnight opening in December in history, only falling behind THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY!
Warner Bros’ is citing competition from Frozen and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire for the difference, but remains very optimistic regarding the films’ success:
“We had a fan base that was drooling to see the film,” said Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution for Warner Bros. “We’re off to a great start, the early matinees are great. I think the number of 3D screens (the increase) will help the upcharge of the film.” Of the pic’s $8.8 million midnight run, $1.2 million came from IMAX theaters.

To celebrate, Regal Cinemas held a massive party at Meltdown Comics in LA. It is hands down the best gathering of Tolkien fans we’ve ever seen, complete with dwarf rapping, Gandalf roasting, and cosplay!

New Sneak Peek at THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG
It’s interesting how most movie adaptations of books are faulted for missing a favorite book scene here or there, but I don’t think you can fault Peter Jackson for something like that, considering that he expanded the epic lone novel into 3 movies. Here’s a new sneak peek at part 2 of The Hobbit movie trilogy, The Desolation of Smaug.

BRIT Awards winner and Grammy nominee Ed Sheeran is making his mark in the movie soundtrack area, with the movie being The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and I hate to say, it is a wonderful piece of music. You may wonder why one of this pop-folk-acoustic singer-songwriter’s songs was included in the soundtrack that was 99% composed fantasy-adventure score by Howard Shore, but there is a place for such a song and I think this one works very well for the end credits.
I admire Sheeran’s style of music and I’m happy that he’s been given this opportunity. Here’s what he tweeted about it:

He stated that this song won’t be released on his new album, but of course, you can get it on The Hobbit soundtrack once it’s released, or you can download it on iTunes.

In a statement, Sheeran added, “It was such an honor working with Peter Jackson on this song. Not only is he one of my favorite directors of my favorite films, ‘The Hobbit’ was the first book I ever read as a child, so it means a lot that I get to produce music for the motion picture.
“I was allowed complete freedom to create what I thought was fitting for the film, which is very rare, and Peter, [filmmakers] Fran [Walsh] and Philippa [Boyens] were always on hand to give notes and pointers. The entire team down in New Zealand was out of this world,” he continued. “The film is amazing! I’m still geeking out that I’ve done a song for a Peter Jackson film set in Middle-earth!”
Jackson co-signs Sheeran’s love for the franchise. “Ed Sheeran is a true Tolkien fan and also happens to be a brilliant singer/songwriter,” he said. ” ‘I See Fire’ is Ed’s emotional response to the film. It’s perfect.”

Two new Desolation of Smaug TV spots!
As fangirlish.com reports, Peter Jackson and co. have released TV spots No. 4 and 5 in anticipation of the second Hobbit movie, set to hit theaters on December 13th. Let’s take a look!
This one features a lot of familiar imagery, with emphasis on themes brought out in Unexpected Journey and several shots shown in previous trailers. One thing that stands out is the bright-colored, overly active effects, which are certain to dazzle those who love the new-age 48 frames-per-second glow, yet frustrate traditionalists who are still clinging to the Lord of the Rings films.
Here’s No. 5:
Here, the emphasis is more on Bilbo and his journey, but there are several moments that ought to excite Hobbit fans considerably. For one thing, it never gets old catching glimpses of the barrels — one of the novel’s most iconic scenes — and the Bilbo-Gandalf dynamic definitely connects well with the successful Gandalf-Frodo tropes in LOTR. My favorite shot? Pause the video at 12 seconds, as the boat travels by water through a quaint, sleepy, almost Scandinavian fishing-looking village. What attention to detail! Often, it’s the set and world creation where Jackson does his best work, and it looks like fans will get plenty of that to chew on.
